About John P.Carlin
John P. Carlin is co-chair of the Investigations Practice Group at Paul, Weiss, and also leads the firm’s Cybersecurity & Data Protection and National Security Practice Groups. He counsels major corporations on cybersecurity, privacy, crisis response, CFIUS, sanctions and export controls, internal investigations, and white-collar defense. John has held senior leadership roles in both Republican and Democratic administrations, including service as Acting Deputy Attorney General of the United States, the Department of Justice’s top national security official, and Chief of Staff to the FBI. In these roles, he oversaw critical DOJ priorities such as corporate criminal enforcement, cybersecurity strategy, cryptocurrency theft investigations, and sanctions enforcement. Recognized as a leading voice on cybersecurity and economic espionage, John has been cited by The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal, and appeared on CBS’ 60 Minutes. He is the co-author of Dawn of the Code War, examining U.S. efforts to combat state-sponsored cyberattacks, and Cybersecurity Law Fundamentals, a widely used reference on legal developments in the field. He also founded the Aspen Institute’s Cybersecurity and Technology Program, where he now serves as Chair Emeritus and Strategic Advisor. Today, John advises companies across industries on responding to fast-moving global and national security threats, major cyber incidents, crisis management, and regulatory strategy.
